Alan Saga, a renowned designer, has created a unique knife holder named "Only Right Here". The design is inspired by bullfighting, a public spectacle dating back to the twelfth century. The piece symbolizes a shift in societal consciousness, marking an era where aggressive activities are becoming extinct. This fusion of bullfighting and kitchenware is a reflection of Mexican and international cultural mores.
The knife holder stands out for its multifaceted and geometric aesthetic. It is a molding injection piece made of ABS PC plastic with a white matte finish, measuring 133 mm in width, 388 mm in depth, and 198 mm in height. The holder supports standard chef knives, with the blades resting on sanitary plastic for a hygienic experience.
The design was developed in Mexico between 2011 and 2013. The underlying research for this design focused on Mexican culture, with data collected through interviews and photographs in the city's downtown. In 2011, professional surveys like Parametria marked a 70 percent rejection of bullfighting, indicating a shift in societal attitudes.
The main challenge in creating "Only Right Here" was developing a piece with a multifaceted geometric shape formed by 162 polysurfaces. Prototypes were created to select the size and material of the piece, including wooden models, 3D prints, and handcrafted aluminum casting. Another challenge was clarifying the relationship between the design and the differing societal positions on bullfighting.
"Only Right Here" was awarded Platinum in the A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award in 2014. The Platinum A' Design Award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
